Jérôme Prévost owns and farms just 2.5 hectares, of which two hectares are old-vine Pinot Meunier in the village of Gueux, inherited from his grandmother. The remaining 0.5 hectares are in Chaumuzy, a cooler area exposed only to the afternoon sun, where flowering and ripening occur nearly two weeks later.

Working with a variety that's often sneered at, in a village few had heard of and with terroirs that are far removed from the clay-chalk stereotype that dominates discussion of Champagne, Prévost's tiny estate, La Closerie, nonetheless produces some of the region's most sought-after wines. Close the selling his grandmother’s vines, Prévost was convinced to start making his wine in Anselme Selosse's cellar with the 1998 vintage, before moving into his own facility in 2003 and later, in 2017, building a state-of-the-art barrel room.

He harvests late—something that's essential if Pinot Meunier is to have character—and ferments and ages his wine in barrel for 11 months. His barrel programme has evolved, and today, he primarily uses 500-litre barrels, with some renewed annually.

Powerful yet fine-boned and immensely characterful, these wines rank among the greatest in the region and receive international acclaim.
